Home Aquaponic System Design

If you have not heard about Aquaponics yet the chances are that you soon will. Aquaponics, the hybrid of aquaculture and hydroponics, is the next line in eco-friendly, sustainable and waste reductive food production (it looks pretty cool too). Aquaponics specifically refers to the use of chemical reactions produced by fish to grow fruit or vegetable crops, typically planted in a grow bed’ above. The fish produce nitrogen that fertilises the crops and this reaction in turn removes ammonia and returns fresh, safe water back into the fish tank. In essence it is a perfectly balanced eco system.

On a large scale this progress in food production has obvious implications for the world economy. Imagine if those currently starving in third world countries had access to such a system? Not only does it provide a source of fresh, organic food, it also tackles huge environmental issues such as carbon foot print. Of course if you are interested in environmental issues or even just a fan of regular fresh organic produce then a home aquaponic system design may be just the right thing for you.

Ecologically you will reduce your personal contribution to carbon pollution and become more energy efficiency. Plus, and perhaps most obviously the main advantage of having one of these systems is the readily available selection of produce you can grow. Organic fruit and vegetables are ridiculously expensive. In fact, a friend of mine who works in whole foods recently sold an organic tomato for FIVE POUNDS. It seems now that only the rich can afford to make an organic tricolore salad! Not so if you have a home aquaponic system design. Aquaponics provide a much cheaper alternative. You decide not only what you want to produce, but also how you want your food to be grown giving you the unique opportunity to take control of what you and your family eat. Of course if you can make it sustainable you are also free to eat the fish, safe in the knowledge that they are totally free from toxins or pollutants.

There are many options available to you. A home aquaponic system design provides a much easier and less labour intensive solution to traditional agricultural methods. For the home gardener there are many outdoor solutions, some of which can be bought from a few burgeoning companies. Many of these start-ups will produce a bespoke system, designed to your own unique specifications. Of course there will be many of you city dwellers reading this who don’t have a garden, there is no need to feel excluded however, indoor solutions are also gaining in popularity. These home aquaponic system designs are particularly striking, like a prettier, more functional version of an aquarium (and certainly more impressive at a dinner party). If this is beyond your financial reach there are many DIY solutions on the internet, some even provide handy YouTube tutorials.

If you like the idea of having freedom over your diet, eating lush fresh fruit, veg and fish and being eco-friendly then the advantage of having a home aquaponic system design is obvious!
